Flag Retirement Ceremony

Hi! My name is Faustina. I’m a Pioneer with Troop CA0138 in Perris, California.

On November 10, 2015 I participated in a Flag Retirement Ceremony. This was my first one ever! I have never been to one before. I hadn’t heard of this before today. This was so awesome for me and my family. My family was there with me too.

I was nervous because I had to speak in front of a crowd. I’m not used to doing that. I got really nervous, but my mom said I sounded great.

Our ceremony began with the posting of the Colors, and the Pledge of Allegiance and flag salute. We read a beautiful poem titled “I Am the Flag of The United States of America” by Sgt. Howard Schnauber. Then we retired the flags and concluded with a prayer.

I personally retired well over 50 flags myself. There were at least 1,000 flags to be retired. No exaggeration!

I really feel blessed that I was able to be a part of this ceremony and I also felt blessed to be an American Heritage Girl, because today I really felt I was honoring my / our “American Heritage.”

These flags are special, and deserve to be treated with dignity and respect, today we did that. I am proud I was able to take part in the Flag Retirement Ceremony, I look forward to many more in the future. I will be sure to make myself available to continuing this tradition into the future.
