The Importance of Serving

By: Patriot, Brooklyn, OH1717

“I promise to love God, cherish my family, honor my country, and serve in my community.”

These are the words that we promise every time we arrive at an American Heritage Girls meeting.

Every time we speak these words, we are telling everyone in the room that we are going to love our Creator with everything we have, cherish our families and not take them for granted, treat our country with respect, and serve the people around us.

But why should we serve?

Ah, this is an important question. If we’re going to joyfully serve our community, let’s discuss what it is.

Back to the beginning

Since the very beginning, we see people using their lives to serve God through serving the people around them. The Bible is scattered with accounts of people helping each other because they knew that in that, they’d be ultimately serving their Creator.

In Luke chapter 10, we see the story of the Good Samaritan, who helped the beaten man lying on the street. He served the man and nursed him back to health because he knew that this man was a creation of God and loved by Him.

It should be the same way with us. We should view others as human beings that are made in God’s image and loved by Him dearly. Our service to others reflects our recognition that God has made all of us equally, and it should humble us.

In John 13: 1-17, Jesus washes his disciple’s feet. Washing feet back then was no ordinary task for a King. Acts like these were reserved for the lowliest servants.

Christ washed the disciple’s feet as an act of service, so that we could follow in his example. In verse 15 he says, “For I have given you an example, that you also should do just as I have done to you.”

Jesus tells us that, just as he served others and humbled himself, we should do the same thing.

Start serving at a young age

As American Heritage Girls, we are blessed with the opportunity to start getting into the habit of serving at a young age. We should view this as a true blessing for 3 reasons:

  1. We get to see that Jesus can and will use us now. We don’t have to wait until we’re a certain age to be used in great ways by God! As young girls, we have the ability to reach out to our community and show them Christ’s light. We can be different than those around us by investing our time in loving and serving others. We realize that God can use us at any age for anything He wants!
  2. As we serve consistently, we are able to better understand and see what our gifts are and are not. Not everyone was gifted with the same skills, and that’s a good thing. Christ uses serving to show us what spiritual gifts we have. Then we can use these spiritual gifts to further serve others in different ways.
  3. We get to shine God’s light in the darkness. When we serve others, we are being that bright light that shows people the way. We can use our time to witness to those around us and tell them about the God we serve. It’s a beautiful outlet for showing people Christ’s love.

Next time you’re working on a service project, don’t feel like you’re doing it out of obligation. Remember that when we serve others, we’re serving our Heavenly Father, and take joy in knowing that your acts of service are pleasing in His sight.

  1. It is my goal to serve more and more whether it is in church, my family, or AHG. I’m so glad to see it in another one’s point of view. Thank you, Brooklyn, for such a good post!
