Known by Love

But if anyone loves God, he is known by God. – 1 Corinthians 8:3

A shrill pitch filled the air as a hungry cry rose from the newborn. She was angry! Joyous laughs and smiles, however, came from the parents as they held their new baby girl. Their hearts filled with delight!

As I saw the beauty of new life unfold, I wondered if this is how God feels when He looks at His creation. King David wrote in Psalm 139:13-16,

“For You formed my inward parts;

You covered me in my mother’s womb.

 I will praise You, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made;

Marvelous are Your works,

And that my soul knows very well.

My frame was not hidden from You,
When I was made in secret,
And skillfully wrought in the lowest parts of the earth.
Your eyes saw my substance, being yet unformed.
And in Your book they all were written,
The days fashioned for me,
When as yet there were none of them
.” (Emphasis added)

God knew you before you were born! You are made in the very image of God! What does being made in the image of God even mean? Everything about you speaks to His unique design. The way you laugh, how your eyes sparkle with joy all tell of a wonderful Creator who fashioned you. The Psalmist (King David) continued with this inspired thought, “How precious also are Your thoughts to me, O God! How great is the sum of them!” (Psalm 139:17)

When God sees you He is delighted! He knows all about you, your character, who you will be one day and even the person you are becoming right now! You are known! You are loved!

Isn’t that an amazing thought? That the God of the universe was so detailed when He created you! You and I were designed for a purpose to know and love Him, however, there is a big problem—sin. Sin causes me to not even want to know Him or love Him. (Ephesians 2)

So now what do I do since my sin distances me from knowing God? May I tell you about the ultimate expression of God’s love? His delight in you goes further than just being detailed. The ultimate expression of loving you was when He sent His Son to die on a cross to bridge that distance.

Can you imagine loving something so deeply that you were willing to give your very life? I can’t imagine it! I often ask, “Why would God send His Son for me? What does He see in me?” I am learning that God delights greatly in His creation. He wants us to know and love Him. You are of great value to Him!

I will be honest, I struggle with thinking I am not valuable and wonder why God created me the way He did with queerness, but as I get to know God more I understand in new ways the meaning of true love and delight.  This is what I have found, when Christ died, He gave me value! When Christ came it cost Him everything (a throne in heaven, being served by angels, having a wonderful relationship within the Trinity) but cost me nothing. When I struggle with wondering why God delights in knowing me I can look at the cross and understand that He bridged the distance which is the greatest expression of love I could ever know. There is no distance that God would not go for His beloved children! How amazing to know the love of God! So how does knowing God’s love for you impact the way you see yourself? How can you make His love known to those around you?
